How to update Teams to the latest version

Many audio, video and loading problems are fixed in newer Teams versions. New Teams updates itself in the background, but only when the app is closed and restarted from time to time. This guide shows how to check and update by hand.

If you are in a meeting, the update will make you leave it. Update before the meeting or afterwards.

Check for updates in Teams (Windows and Mac)

  1. Open Teams and select “Settings and more” (the three dots …) at the top right.
  2. Select “Settings”, then “About Teams”. Teams shows the version and checks for updates.
  3. If an update is available, Teams downloads it. When it asks you to restart, select the restart button.
  4. If Teams does not offer an update, quit Teams completely (tray icon or menu bar icon › Quit), wait a few seconds and start it again.

Windows: update through the Microsoft Store

  1. Open the “Microsoft Store” from the Start menu.
  2. Select “Library” in the lower left corner, then “Get updates”.
  3. Wait until “Microsoft Teams” has been updated, then start Teams.
  4. If the Store is blocked on your computer, ask your IT team to update Teams for you.

Mac: install the newest version

  1. Quit Teams completely: in the menu bar choose Teams › Quit.
  2. If the update from inside Teams does not work, download the latest installer from the official Microsoft Teams download page and open it.
  3. Follow the installer and start Teams again. Your chats and settings stay in your account.

Teams in the browser

  1. The browser version is always current. Reload the page with Ctrl + F5 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac).
  2. Update your browser as well if it offers an update.

Work or school computers

  1. Your organisation may control Teams updates. If there is no update option or it fails, contact your IT team.
  2. Sometimes the update only arrives after a restart of the computer.

After the update, test your microphone, camera and speaker again to be sure everything works.
