Cannot see other participants in Teams
If you can hear people but their video is black, frozen or missing, the problem is usually on the receiving side: the meeting view, a weak network or an outdated app. Work through these checks from top to bottom.
First ask the others: is their camera really on? A tile with a name or initials instead of a picture usually means that person’s camera is off.
Check the meeting view
- Look at the meeting toolbar. Open “More” (…) and check that “Turn off incoming video” is not active. If you see “Turn on incoming video”, select it.
- Change the layout: in the meeting toolbar open “View” and switch between “Gallery”, “Large gallery” and “Speaker”.
- If someone shares their screen, you may only see the shared content. Open “View” and choose a layout that shows the people as well.
- Make sure that nobody has pinned or spotlighted a participant whose camera is off.
Check your network
- When the connection is weak, Teams stops showing video first to keep the audio working. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router or use a network cable.
- Close apps that use a lot of bandwidth, such as downloads, cloud backups or streaming.
- If you use a VPN, turn it off for the meeting if your organisation allows it.
- Use the network check on this site to see if your connection is stable enough for video.
Restart or rejoin
- Leave the meeting and join again using the link from your calendar.
- Quit Teams completely and start it again.
- Update Teams to the latest version. See our guide “How to update Teams to the latest version”.
- Try the meeting in the browser (teams.microsoft.com) with Edge or Chrome. If video works there, the app on your computer is the problem.
If it only fails in one meeting
- Ask the organiser whether video is allowed for attendees in this meeting.
- If only one person’s video is missing, ask that person to turn their camera off and on, or to rejoin.
- Still not solved? Note the exact time and tell your IT team; they can look up the call quality data.
Do others not see you? Use the camera test and the guide for a camera that does not work.
