How to fully restart Teams

Closing the Teams window is not enough: Teams keeps running in the background and holds on to your microphone and camera. Quit it completely, wait a few seconds, then start it again.

If you are in a meeting, quitting Teams makes you leave it. Rejoin afterwards from your calendar or the meeting link.

Windows

  1. Look for the Teams icon in the taskbar notification area at the bottom right. If you do not see it, click the small arrow (^) to show hidden icons.
  2. Right-click the Teams icon and choose “Quit”.
  3. If Teams does not close or the icon is missing: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select every “Microsoft Teams” entry and click “End task”.
  4. Wait about 10 seconds, then open Teams again from the Start menu.

Mac

  1. Right-click the Teams icon in the Dock and choose “Quit” (or click into Teams and press Command + Q).
  2. If Teams does not respond: press Option + Command + Esc, select “Microsoft Teams” and click “Force Quit”.
  3. Wait about 10 seconds, then open Teams again from Launchpad or the Applications folder.

Teams in the browser

  1. Close the browser tab with Teams, or the whole browser if the problem persists.
  2. Open your browser again, go to teams.microsoft.com and sign in.

Still not working? Restart your computer as well – it clears stuck audio and camera drivers.
